Hello and welcome!

I’m Shona, and this is Notes from Stillness — a quiet space for recovery, thoughts, and everyday reflections.

I decided to start this blog at a time when life needed to be slower than I had planned, and quieter than I ever expected. Chronic ill health, and a sudden medical emergency has a way of changing the landscape of life. Something I know too well. For the last three years, I have been on dialysis, have had two strokes – one silent, and one not so silent and scary – followed by a long road of recovery and acceptance of a new way of life. I have found myself learning how to rebuild not only routines, but confidence, identity, joy and hope.

This blog is part of that rebuilding – the rebuilding of the creative person I still am underneath the struggles I am going through.

You will find notes here on recovery, thoughts and reflections, the all familiar feeling of beginning again, and the ordinary moments that can become unexpectedly precious when life has been shaken.

I do not write as an expert, but as someone living through it, learning patience, whilst discovering gratitude in the small things in life and trying to meet each day with honesty and humour.

There may be thoughtful posts, cheerful ones, occasional frustrations, and odd witty observation. Recovery, like life is rarely presented in a neatly wrapped package with a bow.

If you, yourself, are navigating change, loss, healing, uncertainty, or simply looking for a calm and peaceful corner of the internet, I hope you feel at home here.

Please make yourself comfortable, take your time, and stay as long as you like.

I’m glad you have found me.

Shona
